https://rhf.cargo.site/Local-Aggragate August 18 &amp; 19 2018 Local AggregateA project for ArtHouses Whitley Bay This series of experimental objects utilise rudimentary building techniques such as rammed earth and focuses on the material, environment, and sustainability of Frew’s practice. They aim to question what materials we use, what impact those materials can have, and how we can use what is around us in a positive and impactful way. The materials were sourced locally and include waste materials from Ross’ and his host’s household. By incorporating the compost, coffee grounds, sand, and plastic, these objects connect with ideas of the Anthropocene and materials such as plastiglomerate, a composite stone containing traces of human-made detritus. The works attempt to unpick the relationship between fact and fiction by highlighting the unreliable nature of the narratives we consume on a daily basis, be that through news media, the songs we listen to or the built environment. Building upon the unstable foundations of mainstream culture, each work demonstrates a personal reflection on the provenance of its own source material. Ultimately whilst there is seemingly no definitive truth to be obtained from these investigations the show aims to remind audiences the value of remaining critical as consumers of culture. The works I produced for this exhibition, entitled, 'Fields of Wheat' and 'Between the Sun and the Moon' (pictured) take the ‘Metro' free newspaper, distributed by DMG Media as their starting point. I created what could be called a structural collage that comprises of cardboard, gilded Haiku, cyanotype print, papier mache bowls, glass and repurposed prints. The Haiku is dissected from the tabloid stories, adverts and horoscope of the newspaper, which is then pulped to make the bowls that sit below the glass panel. Its mountainous landscape littered with outmoded data search tool devices that once helped NASA collate images of planets within our solar system. These shards of cobalt blue and washed-out yellow hover in the distance. In the foreground lies a hexagonal structure comprised of nineteen individual plates. The design appears to form a map depicting land and sea. Upon the platform, three figures stand towards one another repeating an incantation whispered in the ancient language of Eros whilst in the deathly shadows Thanatos awaits. Ambiguous Utopia at Northern Charter on Friday 26 May was an evening of erotic fabulation comprised by Gayle Meikle, Ross Hamilton Frew and Simon Raven. A one-off performance and exhibition. This event intertwined our independent practice and research into the areas of Sci-fi and utopias, directly referencing Ursula Le Guin’s The Dispossessed. Gayle Meikle is an artist, curator and PhD researcher at Northumbria University currently exploring Eros and how this might underpin a curatorial positioning. Ross Hamilton Frew is an artist who works with drawing, ceramics, collage and assemblage. The curriculum of farming, aesthetics, carpentry, criticality, sewage, reclamation, road mending, craft, drawing, editing, networking, drinking, eating, talking. These hands link the now to the past to the future through the communion of objects and the making of things. They are the custodian of things. The holding of things. Our hands touch. You touch. My hands when outstretched are puffy, lined and veined. With signs of atopic eczema flaking upon the palms. My right thumb rotates to reveal scars of small burns abundant on its surface. A ‘V’ shaped scratch is risen, crooked but healing. My knuckles bulge and naturally curve. Arthritis will of course come. These hands are working hands. Not useless work that darkens the heart. But the delight of the scholar, of the good cook or the skilful maker. Group work is the best form of work. One in which the social body is oiled, tended to and enriched. To learn from one another is to be bathed in the warm glow, to melt from joy. The caress of knowledge is as gentle and nurturing as a mother’s breast or the fluttering sensation of a lover’s embrace. What did they mean when they said knowledge? Their understanding was purely professional of course. But now useless work prevails streaked from years of industrial dirt hanging in the air. Billionaire’s wealth has doubled yet overall wages stagnate. There is a will but not a way. They say worklessness leaves you in poverty. Yet it is a deindustrialisation, deinvestment and deskilling that does. The life route for men is education then employment. For women it could be education then employment or marriage then motherhood – but not for he?Saddle yourself with £27,000 in debt then jump into the gig economy, be your own boss, choose your own hours. Lose your rights. Conform to homogeneity in your precarity. We know that there is no help for us but from one another. That no hand will save us if we do not reach out our hand. And the hand that you reach out is empty, as mine is. This view reveals more of the essence of what should come, a desire to work together in pleasure not toil. People learned to speak, hear, move and handle with these caring hand. Movement#2: Body We are, I am performing a riteTo be in public with everyone else A slowing of time to dirty our grubby handsTo stand in the margins and shout. WE BELONG. But we reject your positioningInstead we turn away from each other and bend backwards Bringing together our bodies into this process of other worlding. YES to the technological body. YES to the relational body. But, in this here and now can we disembody from the gendered body? For civilization is mainly the work of Eros. The exhibition’s title refers to a Noam Chomsky sentence written to be both grammatically correct and semantically nonsensical. This reflects Frew’s attempts to expand on his established drawing practice by incorporating more recent explorations into collage and ceramics. There are elements of experimentation within these new ways of working, which has resulted in a more sculptural output than is typical in his practice. On display in the courtyard was a large structure, designed and built by Ross Hamilton Frew. A poetic offering made by Gayle Meikle adorned its surface. On Saturday 11 June Gayle hosted a stilt drawing workshop inspired by the game ‘Luodo’ which was played at the Open City. . The title 'Neoliberalism Started with Pinochet' connects the current marketisation of universities within the UK to Open City. The experimental school was situated just 3km away from a Pinochet concentration camp. The regime implemented a neoliberal economic policy developed by prominent Chilean economists, the 'Chicago Boys', who had studied the policy under Milton Friedman at the University of Chicago in the 1950s. These include staff from Fine Art, Paper Conservation and Critical Theory; PhD candidates; Graduate and Associate Fellows; artists in residence; alumni; academic visitors; AA2A artists; and colleagues from DIT, Dublin, and Lancaster, Newcastle and Ulster Universities. The work exhibited included work produced while on residency at Paper Mountain, Perth , AU and Highland Print Studio, Inverness, UK. Four artists from across Scotland were selected from an open call by Christine Borland and Craig Coulthard (both artists previously commissioned by the festival) working with Edinburgh Art Festival Director, Sorcha Carey. “…Ross Hamilton Frew takes a more literal and physical approach by pulping works of literature he has gathered. From this raw material, he creates handmade recycled paper. Using the original works as reference, but with enough remove for the sources to become completely anonymised, he in turn creates haikus that pay homage to the pulped texts. The presented works accumulate twelve months of research with Paper Studio Northumbria, at Northumbria University, Newcastle. During this period, Frew investigated various paper production methods to create a paper-stock made entirely from pulped books. This paper stock alongside various examples of found and made paper make up the exhibition. By stripping books, a process popular in 20th Century publishing where unsold books were stripped of their cover to be pulped and recycled, Frew plays on the symbolic imagery of destroying books to create new content. This action suggests the artist is interested in how we value knowledge within contemporary society and what role destruction can play in creativity. We could view the act of pulping literature negatively. Yet, within the industry, it has the long term effect of diminishing the number of copies of a given publication and making the surviving documents more valuable in the book collecting market. These literary sacrifices may go relatively unnoticed within this market, but the symbolism holds. Frew shows his gratitude for this material and pays homage to the lost texts by collecting five and seven-syllable sentences from these books to build haiku, repurposing the content to create new meaning. These haiku are turned into wall drawings and sit comfortably alongside the resulting paper works. The simple Japanese poem structure reflects the simple form of the work and vice versa. The pieces are not titled; instead grouped in proximity to the haiku. This decision emphasises the work as a body rather than a series of individual drawings. The involvement of the hand in the papermaking process introduces an artisanal element to Frew’s practice. However, this element is in contrast with his drawing method. Previously Frew used a series of frameworks to produce his work but has in this instance opted to allow the surface he draws upon to dictate the outcome. The drawing surface contains the text’s speckled remains that gave way for its production, and these markings provide the starting point for all the exhibited works. Frew’s straight drawn lines connect the dots and allow him to build his images. This process of marking, erasing, and shifting is mechanical. Introducing a photocopier Frew builds on the speckled line’s texture, balancing the praxis between the handmade and the machine, the artisanal and the mass-produced. Frew further emphasised the point with the title of the show ‘Locus of Points’ which references geometry. A locus is a set of points whose location satisfies or is determined by one or more specified conditions. Here Frew alludes to an obsession with systems and structures within his practice and allows that system to dictate how he produces his work. However, the inevitability of human error and the unpredictability of a hand made process give the drawing no other option than to forgo any ideas of perfection. With this removed, the emphasis aimed soley towards creating new experimentation in contemporary drawing.
