Mullaloo Beach mural with Anna Dunhill
Commissioned by Joondalup City Council
March 2013
In late 2012, visual artists Anna Dunnill and Ross Hamilton Frew began a creative collaboration that would eventually result in a mural at North Mullaloo Beach. Initially communicating via social media, the two artists developed a line of thought related to tactility, language, and communication. Here they Examined themes such as repetition and misinterpretation.
Workshops held at the Peter Cowan Writer's Centre as part of the City of Joondalup's Mural Arts Program in early 2013 offered poets a spectacular opportunity for all kinds of creative output. When introduced to Ross Hamilton Frew (based in Glasgow, United Kingdom) and Anna Dunnill (based in Perth, Australia), the workshop participants were eager to contribute their creative writings and advise on possible concepts for the mural design.
This collaboration bears eloquent witness to the sensitivity and respect with which the artists responded to one another and the contribution from the Peter Cowan Writers centre participating poets. The modifications they made and the passages of overpainting are a testament to the working atmosphere of mutual appreciation and acceptance.
The final design reflected the City's vibrancy and excitement in the festival and was commissioned to coincide with the 2013 Joondalup Festival's opening.
